Once again - to those who commented and made suggestions on the site design, thank you so much it’s been really useful to have your input!

It is Stereoscopy Day tomorrow and that means my little website comes alive and gets extra content - the first of so much to come over the next weeks, months and…(gulp!) years! Here’s a short rundown of what you can expect from sometime Saturday morning, UK time:

3 new viewer articles, covering Sightseer, True-View and the little Weetabix viewer

2 sets of Sightseer views - that’s 32 new stereo images in total

1 set of True-View views - 14 new stereo images in total

1 new set of Vistascreen views to add to the one on the site already - that’s 10 more stereo images

Reference lists of all views issued for the Sightseer and True-View viewers

The website will also get a new page (The Collection Index) which will allow you to select any viewer, with all it’s associated views entries in one go, rather than going through individual posts - you can also do that of course by selecting 1 of the tags on the right hand side of the screen.

Since publicising the upcoming launch, I’ve also had a highly informative new article on another British viewer and format, along with some lovely stereo scans, kindly donated to me for use on the site and they will be going up very soon - more news on that to follow.

In the meantime, I’ll be feeding stereo rolls through my camera, and overworking my flatbed scanner (and my brain!) to bring you lots more content very soon. I’ll be using this newsletter to let you know of updates, and anything else that might be relevant.

If you want to get in touch with suggestions or comments, please do - you can either comment on this article on Substack, or reply to the email that brought you the newsletter.

I hope you enjoy the new content tomorrow!

All the best
Phil
www.britishvintagestereoscopy.co.uk

Thanks for reading British Vintage Stereoscopy! So, to the news…

I have also been in touch with the Brian May Archive Of Stereoscopy and can now reveal that my website will be going live on Stereoscopy Day, 21 June 2026 - in just a little over 2 weeks’ time!

Feedback for the site has been overwhelmingly positive so far, which is wonderful (and frankly, a big relief) and suggestions for tweaks have also been very constructive - where I can take those on board I have done, and will be doing over the coming months.

Ahead of launch day, the site has been stripped of some of the test content - I will now start publicising the site a bit more, and have left the existing Vistascreen content on the site to act as an example of what’s to come. Thanks to those of you involved in checking out the early version of the site.

So ahead of launch day, I’ve just finished an article on True-View, which will be 1 part of the content on the site on 21 June, together with a list of known True-View views and the first of many sets of stereo views. Hopefully more than just one set, if I can get them done in time.

I’ll be writing again ahead of launch day, so, until then - thanks for reading!

Phil

British Vintage Stereoscopy

Thanks for reading British Vintage Stereoscopy! I must also thank a couple of “guinea pigs” for their comments. And for you in having the faith to subscribe so early.

So far, I have 3 articles on viewers - the Sightseer roll film viewer, and the Vistascreen and Weetabix viewers; a complete list of Sightseer rolls issued, a similar list of Vistascreen views (although always subject to change as more pop up); plus 1 set of Sightseer views and 1 set of Vistascreen views.

Views will be in stereo - Vistascreen views are just edited scans of the cards - parallel freeview or a 3d viewer will be needed to view those. The Sightseer roll that’s up has been digitised as separate frames, followed by some editing and then recompiled as stereos and saved in universal L-R-L format, which will suit both parallel and cross eye free view, and 3d viewers.

There are unlikely to be any anaglyphs added to the site - although I do have a small number of anaglyph card views which may be added at some point, so never say never - I just won’t be converting regular stereo views to anaglyph.

Anyway, the site isn’t really “live” as yet but if you want to see what’s on there so far, allow me to present to you British Vintage Stereoscopy.

Lots of views and quite a few more viewers all to be added - and certainly a few more views sets before I go “live” and start publicising the site more widely. What you see today is just the start. Thanks for your interest. Any comments you have, good or bad - are always welcome. A new design I’m happy with; redesigned logos; I’ve written (and rewritten!) a few Viewer articles; I’ve been digitising and scanning and created a couple of Views pages so far - I would like a few more before I go live - and a couple of lists of “Views available”.

All of this is in draft form at the moment as things are worked on and tweaked endlessly. I am happy to say it’s getting closer to publication, which will be (I hope) within a couple of months. I would say sooner than that but I am away on holiday soon and I don’t want to make false promises. But a couple of months ago I suddenly had no idea if this would ever happen, or how - and now it’s very close to being ready, so lots has happened.

The latest big step forward is registering the domain and that’s been done today! More on that, when the site is ready for your eyes!

This newsletter will act as a “notification of website updates” in the main going forward but I will most certainly be posting little pieces about new viewers or views I acquire when there’s an interesting story to tell, so would encourage anyone interested in this niche area of stereoscopy to sign up - it’s always going to be free to do so. The stereo views themselves will be on the website - but 1 or 2 will perhaps find their way on here as a “preview” type thing.

The website itself will detail Viewers, have lots of Views (eventually, this will be where most updates are, as more get added) and reference lists where these are known and applicable - and perhaps other relevant things if I think of anything.

Untli next time…thanks for reading.

Phil

Thanks for reading British Vintage Stereoscopy!
